30Jun11

God commands our sole worship of Him, and God commands the manner by which we worship Him (John 4:23).  Matthew Henry put it this way, It concerns us to be right, not only in the object of our worship, but in the manner of it.  Our worship must be heart and mind driven not merely traditional, liturgical repetition. It’s easy to do what we do because, well, that’s what we do.  It’s hard work to prepare the heart to meet God and to call our minds to remove distractions, giving all attention to Him. The Bible never said worship is easy.

It is offensive to the Creator to worship out of vain repetition (Matthew 6:7).  A recognizable tune carries familiar words, and we parrot them because that is what we are supposed to do in church.  The preacher calls to attention a text that is not novel or new, and we lament the moment, noting to ourselves, “I’ve heard this all before.”  Giving is a tax issue and not a love for God issue.  Corporate prayer is an opportunity to check a cell phone for updates, texts, and today’s weather.

Worship is serious business where we meet God and should be engaged by serious minded people.  Pastor Lig Duncan put it this way, There are two ways to commit idolatry: worship something other than the true God or worship the true God in the wrong way.
