30Jun11

From his headquarters as Commander-in-Chief, George Washington directed the following prayer to the governors and states of the new nation on June 8, 1783.    His reference to the recipients has been replaced by the words “United States.”  Otherwise the words and spelling are those of George Washington.

I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have the United States in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Fields, and final, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with the Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation. Amen

That instruction from our first president would serve our nation well today. Beyond that, such a prayer made to our Heavenly Father would serve our church and individual families too.  As we meet God in worship this morning, let’s pray together for this kind of humility before Him.
