We must not cease to wonder at the great marvels of our God. It would be very difficult to draw a line between holy wonder and real worship; for when the soul is overwhelmed with the majesty of God’s glory, though it may not express itself in song, or even utter its voice with bowed head in humble prayer, yet it silently adores. Our incarnate God is to be worshipped as ‘the Wonderful.’ That God should consider his fallen creature, man, and instead of sweeping him away with the besom of destruction, should Himself undertake to be man’s Redeemer, and to pay his ransom price, is, indeed marvelous! But to each believer redemption is most marvelous as he views it in relation to himself. It is a miracle of grace indeed, that Jesus should forsake the thrones and royalties above, to suffer ignominiously below for you. Let your soul lose itself in wonder, for wonder is in this way a very practical emotion. Holy wonder will lead you to grateful worship and heartfelt thanksgiving.

With these helpful words from C.H. Spurgeon, we consider our God and His great redemptive work on our behalf in His Son, Jesus Christ.  It is time to meet God.  May your soul lose itself in the wonder of Him. Please take the moments prior to the service to prepare for worship.  Our children through third grade should dismiss to Children’s Church following the offering.

Thine, Lord, is wisdom, Thine alone;
Justice and truth before Thee stand:
Yet, nearer to Thy sacred throne,
Mercy withholds Thy lifted hand.

Each evening shows Thy tender love,
Each rising morn Thy plenteous grace;
Thy wakened wrath doth slowly move,
Thy willing mercy flies apace.

To Thy benign, indulgent care,
Father, this light, this breath, we owe;
And all we have, and all we are,
From Thee, great Source of being, flow.

Thrice Holy! Thine the kingdom is,
The power omnipotent is Thine;
And when created nature dies,
Thy never ceasing glories shine

Abounding In Thanksgiving was the admonition of the Apostle Paul to believers (2 Cor. 9:12) and the practice of God’s people throughout time.  As we gather together today, let’s do the same.  Specifically, let’s thank the Lord for the Church of Jesus Christ, purchased by the blood of our Lord, made the bride of Christ, led by Christ our head, and existing for the glory of God alone.  To think, we are the church and, therefore, participate and benefit from all these.  May the Lord be pleased with our worship of Him as we abound in thanksgivings toward Him.

Gracious Savior, Who Didst Honor

Emily Anne Eliza Shirreff (1814-1897)

 Gracious Savior, who didst honor
Womankind as woman’s Son;
Very Man, though God begotten,
And with God the Father One;
Grant our womanhood may be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.

Jesus, Son of human mother,
Bless our motherhood, we pray;
Give us grace to lead our children,
Draw them to Thee day by day;
May our sons and daughters be
Dedicated, Lord, to Thee.

Thou who didst with Joseph labor,
Nor didst humble work disdain,
Grant we may Thy footsteps follow
Patiently through toil and pain;
May our quiet home life be
Lived, O Lord, in Thee, to Thee.

Thou who didst go forth in sorrow,
Toiling for the souls of men,
Thou who shalt draw all men to Thee,
Though despised, rejected then;
Humble though our influence be,
Use it in the world for Thee.

MAY SCRIPTURE MEMORY – John 8:29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.

Happy Birthday to the King James Bible.  400 years have passed since its publication in England. For many of us, the King James Bible was the source for our fist exposure to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our earliest Scripture memory had us quoting words like, “Thee” and “Thou,” and verbs that ended in “eth.”  When we hear familiar texts read from the KJV, our minds are drawn back to precious times around a dinner table, during a Christmas program, or in a worship service.

The KJV’s translators took approximately 7 years to do their work.  The task was monumental, and the product became the standard for English translations. In addition to the translation, these men included a preface entitled, “The Translators to the Reader.”  It is found in some current copies of the King James Bible.  Their words in the preface are critical to understand what they thought about what they were doing in translating the Word of God from the original languages into modern English.  Among many conclusions was their position that it is necessary to have translations in the current spoken language, even if this meant one revision after another.  For the first readers of the King James Bible, the translation was the style and vocabulary of how English speaking people talked.  It was a modern translation.  The King James translators would be thrilled at every translation of God’s Word that attempts to be true to the original texts.

We rejoice that we hold in our hands today the Word of God in many different translations and a few different languages.  May the Lord use the King James Bible and other good, literal translations to bring people to Himself and to mature believers in Him.

MAY SCRIPTURE MEMORY – John 8:29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.

It took a while, but the people finally got it right.  When the Lord rode in to Jerusalem on the donkey, they shouted together, “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’  The King of Israel!” (John 12:13).

You can be certain that they did not fully understand what they were saying, but you do.  Do you know Jesus to be the one sent from God to be the savior of the world?  Do you know Him to be Israel’s king and, therefore, the king of all creation?  Do you recognize that praise should be made only to Him?  If so, then what prevents you from joining together with all present in praise to Jesus?

It is time to meet the Lord.  He is King Jesus.  He will be praised by His own, or if they refuse, by creation itself.  Our Lord said, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”  Let’s not leave the privilege of praise to rocks.  Let’s praise Him together!

It is time to meet God.  Please take the moments prior to the service to prepare for worship. Children through 3rd grade should dismiss to children’s church when instructed.

At the bottom of this page is a suggested memory verse for April.  Few Christian teens and fewer adult Christians have the Christian discipline of memorizing verses or sections of the Bible.  Sadly, some look at children’s programs with emphasis on Bible memory and conclude that memorizing the Bible is only for kids.  Others suggest that adults cannot memorize, and some just do not see the point.

There are some exceptions but most reading this can memorize some part of God’s Word.  Here’s a little more on the value of memorizing God’s Word.

One of the most valuable aids to meditation is Scripture memorization. In fact, when I encounter someone who is battling discouragement or depression, I often ask two questions: “Are you singing to the Lord?” and “Are you memorizing Scripture?” These two exercises are not some magical formula to make all our problems go away, but they do have incredible power to change our perspective and attitude toward the issues we are facing.

Nancy Leigh DeMoss

God’s Word must be so strongly fixed in our minds that it becomes the dominant influence in our thoughts, our attitudes, and our actions. One of the most effective ways of influencing our minds is through memorizing Scripture.

Jerry Bridges

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE  –  Our annual service is from 7:00-8:00pm on Friday, April 22.

As part of this morning’s worship service, we will witness public declarations of faith in Jesus Christ in Believer’s Baptism.  We do not baptize babies at First Calvary.  Instead, we practice what is the pattern in the New Testament: individuals, having previously expressed faith in Christ, are baptized by immersion.  The picture in immersion models the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

To be clear one’s baptism does nothing to secure salvation.  In fact, the ones being baptized know this best.  Spurgeon put it this way,  A man who knows that he is saved by believing in Christ does not, when he is baptized, lift his baptism into saving ordinance.  In fact, he is the very best protester against this mistake, because he holds that he has no right to be baptized until he is saved.

Today’s baptisms are wonderful opportunities to express praise to our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.  As we hear the testimonies of conversion, we can marvel at God’s mercy.  As we witness the baptisms, we will see the promise of Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, fulfilled before our very eyes.  It may be that these acts of obedience will prompt obedience in other disciples or be the next step in the salvation of sinner.

April Scripture Memory:  Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

There are many things about which we can disagree.  As Baptists we embrace individual soul liberty and have differing views on certain issues.  However, we cannot disagree on the gospel of Jesus Christ.  That gospel says Jesus Christ is the sole answer for my great problem.  My great problem is sin.  His great answer is the cross.  My problem is that I was born speaking lies, and I soon I was able demonstrated that I was a rebel against God.  Given the choice, I regularly chose my way and rejected God’s way.  His answer to my problem is mercy, desiring in grace to free me from the penalty of my open rebellion.  God did this in the cross. To believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is to commit to trust the work of Jesus Christ on the cross for one’s salvation – nothing more and nothing less.

The gospel drives every aspect of the Christian life.  We live from day to day understanding the core truths; I have a great problem – sin; the cross of Jesus Christ is the sole answer.  Learn to glory in the gospel, Christian friend.  This is our highest joy, and about this gospel we always must agree.

March Scripture Memory:  Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
